Coil Leveling - The process of flattening rolled sheets by reducing or eliminating distortions such as edge waves or center buckling prior to shearing. It incorporates a series of closely spaced small diameter upper and lower work rolls that are nested. Across the face of each work roll is a number of narrow backup rolls. These backup rolls can be adjusted to deflect a section of the work rolls making the material traveling through that section take a longer path than the other sections. The deflecting of the work rolls to stretch a section of material to correct a shape problem is the basic principle behind coil leveling.
